Borehole PRGL1-4 drilled in the upper slope of the Gulf of Lion provides an exceptional record to investigate the impact of late Pleistocene orbitally-driven glacio-eustatic sea-level oscillations on the sedimentary outbuilding of a river fed continental margin. High-resolution grain-size and geochemical records supported by oxygen isotope chronostratigraphy allow reinterpreting the last 500 ka upper slope seismostratigraphy of the Gulf of Lion. Five main sequences, stacked during the sea-level lowering phases of the last five glacial-interglacial 100-kyr cycles, form the upper stratigraphic outbuilding of the continental margin. The high sensitivity of the grain-size record down the borehole to sea-level oscillations can be explained by the great width of... |

This study is among the first to examine the genesis of the seafloor and subsurface undulations on the Adriatic continental shelf by integrating stratigraphic information and in situ and laboratory geotechnical measurements. Interpretation of sediment behavior is based on a 32-m-long borehole crossing ( 1) a possible shear plane and ( 2) a silty clay layer at about 20 m below seafloor (mbsf) on which sediment undulations are rooted and could be interpreted as a potential weak layer succession. Our main results in terms of triggering mechanism for the observed undulations show that under an earthquake, liquefaction and/or failure of the silty-clay sediments ( weak layer) leading to deformation of the upper more cohesive sediments is possible only when such... |

To improve understanding of evolution of submarine canyons, a three-dimensional slope-stability model is applied to Bourcart Canyon in the western Gulf of Lions in the Mediterranean Sea. The model builds on previous work by Chen and others, and it uses the upper bound theorem of plasticity to calculate the factor of safety of a kinematically admissible failing mass. Examples of three-dimensional failure surfaces documented in the literature were used to test the model formulation. Model application to Bourcart Canyon employed the results of a detailed stratigraphic analyses based on data acquired by swath bathymetry, sub-bottom profiling, high-resolution seismic reflection surveys, and piston coring. The sediment layers were also characterized using... |

A detailed morphological analysis of the outer shelf and continental slope of the Western Gulf of Lion is presented, based on swath bathymetry data together with sub-bottom profiles and high resolution seismic reflection profiles. These data reveal two main erosive features, of very different dimensions: the axial incision and the canyon's major valley. The height of axial incisions' flanks with respect to the canyon deepest point (the thalweg) ranges from 40 to 150 m. It creates a small axial erosive path within the canyon's major valley, which is typically bounded by flanks of more than 700 m in height. We interpret the axial incision observed in the sea floor as the imprint of turbidity currents that eroded the floor of canyons during phases of... |

The Rhône pro-delta sediments receive the particulate inputs from the Rhône River, the largest freshwater discharge of the Western Mediterranean Sea. Trace element (TEs: Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations and stable Pb isotope ratios were determined along a 7.7-meter-long sediment core collected from the Rhône prodeltaic lobe, archiving the deposits of the last 400 years. Trace element mean concentrations during the pre-industrialized era (before 1850 AD) were no different from the average composition of Earth’s upper crust, except for Cr. Principal component analysis, performed on TEs and tracers, suggests three origins for TEs that we identified as (i) marine biogenic material (Ag, Cd), (ii) ultramafic rocks (Li, Cr, Ni), and (iii) other... |

The Okinawa Trough is a natural laboratory for the study of later Quaternary land-ocean interaction and paleoenvironmental changes. In this study we reconstruct the evolution of clay mineral assemblages in Core DGKS9604 retrieved from the central Okinawa Trough. Illite dominates the clay mineral compositions, with average contents above 60%. Clay mineral evolution since 28 ka is closely related to changes in sediment provenance and paleoenvironment. Sea level rise and the strength of the Kuroshio Current control the dispersal and deposition of clays on the East China Sea shelf and in the Okinawa Trough, and thus, determine the clay mineral compositions in the core sediments. During the late last glacial period (28.0-14.0 ka), the paleo-Changjiang River... |

The Rhône deltaic margin (NW Mediterranean) was under the influence of a very high sedimentation flux during the last climatic cycle, because of the vicinity of major fluvial systems that fed the outer shelf during the glacial period and the inner shelf during the deglacial period. The two areas provide a complete sedimentary record of depositional events from 130 cal. kyr BP to present. This sequence represents the sedimentary expression of the glacial/interglacial cycle (100 kyr cyclicity) within the Late Quaternary succession [1]. [Extract] |

Gas seeping to the seafloor through structures such as pockmarks may contribute significantly to the enrichment of atmospheric greenhouse gases and global warming. Gas seeps in the Gulf of Lions, Western Mediterranean, are cyclical and pockmark “life” is governed both by sediment accumulation on the continental margin and Quaternary climate changes. 3D seismic data, correlated to multi-proxy analysis of a deep borehole, have shown that these pockmarks are associated with oblique chimneys. The prograding chimney geometry demonstrates the syn-sedimentary and long-lasting functioning of the gas seeps. Gas chimneys have reworked chronologically constrained stratigraphic units and have functioned episodically, with maximum activity around sea-level lowstands.... |

Since the Last Glacial Maximum, the Rhone River, which is the most important source of freshwater and sediment to the western Mediterranean Sea, migrated in a north-westward direction during the rapid Deglacial and Early Holocene sea-level rise. During the phase of global high sea-level (Middle and Late Holocene), an overall eastward migration of the Rhone outlet, under natural and/or human influence, is recorded through several sediment accumulations confined along the inner shelf in the form of deltaic lobes. These lobes that make up the whole Rhone subaqueous delta represent very expanded sedimentary archives of the Rhone Holocene history. In this paper, using three long piston cores retrieved from the most recent Bras de Fer (RHS-KS55) and Roustan... |

On the Gulf of Lions margin, the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) event led to a significant and widespread erosion of the Miocene shelf and slope. It is thus difficult nowadays to restore the morphology of the margin at the beginning of the crisis, and to study the Middle-Upper Miocene series rarely preserved from erosion. In this study, thanks to the use of multichannel seismic reflection data from the Gulf of Lions western slope, it has been possible to image the Miocene slope deposits. Interpretation of the data reveals several diachronic sediment bodies just beneath the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. These bodies are related to slope erosional-depositional complexes, underlain by erosional unconformities outlined by seismic reflector truncations. They are... |

Based on new and existing data on oxygen isotopes, alkenone-surface seawater temperature trends, planktonic foraminifers, lithology, and clay mineral composition of piston cores, a distinct cooling event has been identified around 8,200 cal a B.P. in the middle Okinawa Trough, northwest Pacific. This corresponds to the 8,200 a B.P. cooling event recorded in many places of the Northern Hemisphere. During this event, the local temperature decreased by 1 degrees C, and the delta O-18 value increased by 0.6%omicron. A strengthened Asian winter monsoon is the most probable cause for this event, which thus adds further credibility to the contention that we are dealing here with a global phenomenon. |

Expanded marine Holocene archives are relatively scarce in the Mediterranean Sea because most of the sediments were trapped in catchment areas during this period. Mud belts are the most suitable targets to access expanded Holocene records. These sedimentary bodies represent excellent archives for the study of sea-land interactions and notably the impact of the hydrological activity on sediment accumulation. We retrieved a 7.2m long sediment core from the Rhone mud belt in the Gulf of Lions in an area where the average accumulation rate is ca. 0.70 m 1000 yr(-1). This core thus provides a continuous and high-resolution record of the last 10 ka cal BP. A multiproxy dataset (XRF core scan, C-14 dates, grain size and organic-matter analysis) combined with... |

The modern Rhone delta in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) is a typical wave-dominated delta that developed after the stabilization of relative sea level following the last deglacial sea-level rise. Similar to most other deltas worldwide, it displays several stacked parasequences and lobes that reflect the complex interaction between accommodation, sediment supply and autogenic processes on the architecture of a wave-dominated delta. The interpretation of a large set of newly acquired very high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, well constrained by 14C dates, provides a refined three-dimensional image of the detailed architecture (seismic bounding surfaces, sedimentary facies) of the Rhone subaqueous delta, and allows us to propose a... |

We tested the applicability of the BIT (branched and isoprenoid tetraether) index as a proxy for palaeoflood events in the river-dominated continental margin of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean). We compared the concentrations of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (br GDGTs) and crenarchaeol in suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected downstream in the Rhône River, as well as in surface sediments and a ca. 8m piston core from the Rhône prodelta. The core covered the last 400 yr, with four distinct intervals recording the river influence under natural and man-induced shifts in four main channels of the river mouth (Bras de Fer, Grand Rhône, Pégoulier, and Roustan). The results indicate that there are mixed sources of br GDGTs and... |
